Sommi, Leone de

(1527-92)
   Italian dramatist and poet. He was born in Mantua. He wrote and staged plays for the Gonzaga court theatre, and eventually became renowned throughout Europe as a dramatist and director. In 1585 he bought property in Mantua on which he built a synagogue. His writings include plays, poems, canzones and satires. His greatest works are the Dialoghi, an exposition on stagecraft, and his Hebrew comedy of betrothal, Zahut Bedih uta de-Kidushin.
